History: If there's two word for Raylene Carter's past; it's fucked up. Most of her childhood was spent under her sister's wing, being fed fairy tales and happiness to protect her from their older brother. When Jilly May Carter finally stopped coming back from her little runaway phases - Del Carter turned his attention to Raylene instead.

She suffered in silence, quickly learning her family wouldn't help her at all. Either they were too afraid or they just didn't care. After enduring his personal brand of torture for close to 5 years, her best friend Pinky gave her a switchblade and showed her how to use it.

It wasn't long before she used it on her brother - and that was when something snapped in Raylene. After cutting one of his legs, Del didn't touch her at all. And Raylene, instead of running away right then and there like her sister decided to stay and keep a low profile.

Pinky and her were like peas in a pod, they did everything together. Of course, when the time came for them to leave high school and try to fend for themselves they were running cons. First in Tyson, then in Newford. They were called 'badgers': women that pretended to be hookers and lured men to hotel rooms, drugged them and took all their money and credit cards. Raylene called them a bit more classy than the average badger game because they weren't pretending to be streetwalkers specifically. They upped their game for a few years, blackmailing men and doing pretty well at it. But all good things have to come to an end.

A dirty cop caught Raylene trying to solicite him, though she denied it, he still blackmailed her - only making the mistake of telling her that her non-exsistant pimp was already caught and outed her. That was a marked difference between Raylene and Pinky and other badger trap girls. They had no pimp, they operated themselves. Through a truly fucked up turn of events, the cop got killed and Raylene and Pinky found themselves with enough money to split and head for Newford - bigger fish to fry. Raylene ran one particular con on an old man dying by pretending to be a sweet, young thing interested in a dusty old man. Asked for cash and made it sound really desperate - never looked back after taking him for all he was worth and buying two tickets to L.A for a fresh start. Pinky always envisioned a career for herself in film - she found one in dirty movies instead. Was pretty good at it too.

Raylene tried turning her usual tricks but found that she was outmatched in The City of Angels. Everyone was running cons on everyone and she couldn't get a foot in the door. Eventually, she got caught and did six months in prison. After that, a depression settled over her and ate her up. The only time she feels alive then is when she dreams - when she dreams she's a wolf and running.

That went on for three years before she decided she would either force herself back into the world or kill herself. So she got a job at a printing shop.

Life was pretty decent for about seven years for Raylene. Pinky went right on making her porno movies and Raylene worked nights at a printing place.

It was then she met Hector Rivera. He just started working at the shop and was crazy about computers. Raylene considered him to be an absolute genius and he taught her how to use computers and write coding and shit like that. She didn't count on falling in love with the kid. After a year they finally established an actual relationship and that lasted for eight months. She never had her wolf dreams when she was with him.

And then he got shot. A crack-head came to the print shop early one morning after Raylene stepped out of the shop to get some coffee for them both. He was there when she got back and would have shot her if not for Hector shouting and trying to stop him. That only got him killed. Raylene didn't deal with it healthily either, only blaming Hector for doing that to himself. And them.

Shortly after that, Pinky got herself six years in the pen. And Raylene was all alone.

She continued to work at the print shop, not knowing what else to do. And all the while - she had her dreams. Except something was different this time around. The pack she ran with in her dreams had a new addition. With eyes that looked a lot like Pinky's.

The next day she visited Pinky in jail and confirmed that they were sharing dreams - running together as wolves and hunting down whatever they pleased. Of course...deer only satisfied for so long.

Badder prey was afoot in their dreamlands. More mystical prey. Like unicorns!

They didn't exists in real life but they did here; and Raylene wanted to down one real bad. Eventually the pack did it, got to kill one and started eating it and drinking it's blood. Which - of course - had magical properties. After their fourth or fifth unicorn, there was a marked difference in them. It started to de-age them both, and heal whatever wounds they sustained in their wolf forms.

Life went on like that for a long time until Raylene saw an article about her long-lost sister Jilly. And it made her change. Almost like she was a wolf in the real world too because it made her see red like she did on a hunt.

It's 1999 when Pinky is finally released. Raylene has a few things on her to-do list. Like finding her damn sister.

Personality:

Raylene is a angry, angry woman. She's been that way her entire life - it's what's motivated her since she was very young. Each and every one of the shaping events of her life have been first started with the thought of her sister. And, yes, it is as obsessive as it sounds. Raylene was very attached to Jilly when they were young and regards her disappearance when they were children as an ultimate betrayal. Since then: since she burned down the tree they sat under, since she cut her brother's leg - she's tried to make the most opposite impression of her sister upon the world as possible. Where Jilly left Tyson early, Raylene stuck around. Where Jilly didn't finish school - Raylene did so as quietly as possible. She didn't want to make an impression - something she learned very early on in life to do. Where Jilly hides her backwater roots Raylene uses them to make people think she's less intelligent than them - so it makes it easier for her to rob them blind. Ray didn't ever try to do very well when it came to legal things, it would be too much work and cons came easy to her.

Anger management issues galore - but that's not all that's to this woman.

Raylene Carter knows full well what she's capable of and what she isn't. She knows exactly how smart she is, how smart other people are in relation to her and when to take advantage of that difference. She's not only smart - she's cunning. Wiley; as Pinky so aptly described her. She's the talker of the two. There is one segment in Onion Girl where Ray convinces Pinky to go visit an old woman out in the middle of nowhere close to Tyson about some magic. While Pinky is scared to death, Ray sweet talks the old woman - even brings her gifts and such to see if she can get her talking. Though she may dislike a lot of things about the world - Raylene knows when to put on the sugar and spice act for people and when to snarl and try ripping their gut open.
It's a very subtle balance.

When it comes to loyalty and trust, Raylene is (surprisingly) in possession of both. She sticks with Pinky through thick and thin and doesn't think twice about shooting a man to save her ass. Betray that trust though and Ray is quick to turn and never forgive (see: Jilly). She doesn't handle loss well, that much is easy to see through Jilly leaving and Hector dying on her. Instead of blaming the killer she blames him for dying on her, instead of properly dealing with her grief and pain she bottles it up.

Ray often talks about a darkness inside of her, something that drives her to violence and complete rage. Usually it's manageable - but only because she can take it out in her dreams. When Raylene Carter dreams, she turns into a wolf and hunts. Because of the nature of her world and being related to Jilly, who's always had that special something about her, Raylene is able to cross over into another world when she sleeps. And there she shapeshifts into a wolf and goes to town; killing as much as she can. She uses the dreams as an outlet for what she wishes to do in the real world.

Making a living as a con artist establishes a kill-or-be-killed mentality in you that can't be taken away. Raylene is always casing people, trying to work an angle and make it out unscathed. Even when she met Hector (easily the nicest thing that ever happened to her) Raylene thought about having to get dressed all cute and slutty for him to teach her about computers. Imagine her surprise when he just...did. It's strange to her to be in a relationship of any kind that doesn't involve any manipulation on her part of any kind.

When left alone too long - Raylene can easily slip into a bout of depression. Her's is a crippling one and leaves her unmotivated and listless - just laying on the couch as the days pass, doing nothing. She commented once that she'd either kill herself or just go out and do something - anything. It was only her wolf dreams when Pinky was in prison for all those years that kept her from going off the deep end.

Raylene feels a kinsmanship towards young, directionless, people. Something she isn't too hot on acting on - simply because the idea of being responsible for another person when she can barely take care of herself (in her opinion) terrifies her, and she thinks that being around a family like her's has somehow made her forever unsuited to caring for someone else, especially someone dependent on you.

Ray is - at her very simplest - not a child, but an adolescent who hates the world. Especially her sister. Ruthless, determined, loyal and deeply, deeply scarred: Raylene Carter just wants some peace in her life at the end of the day. Which is really at odds with her forever bristling self, but it's true, when given peace and quiet Raylene relishes it and always mourns it's passage. She wants what normal people get to have and to shed her ties to her past but the reminder of her sister is enough to make her cling to her accent, her bad ways and less than kind personality.

Abilities:

  • Raylene is wicked smart. A quick thinker and brilliant strategist, it manifested in organizing some rather brilliant small time cons when she was 20 but as she got older it festered in her. She has a quick tongue and it's very easy for her to talk her way out of situations.

  • When Hector was still alive he taught Raylene everything he could about computers - this was at the turn of the century, when domain names were being sold left and right. Seeing as Hector was a bit of a genius with them, Raylene picked up more than her fair share of knowledge about them.

  • Raylene Carter has managed to stay pretty left alone in her life and that's due in no small part to her ferocity when cornered. If it means her life or safety Raylene won't hesitate to kill someone or to hurt them.
